The annual Main Event serves as a fund-raising event for extra projects and field trips coordinated by Main Street School teachers. But it also serves as a source of fun, excitement and good food - and despite being moved inside because of rain Thursday evening, this year proved to be no exception.

Date: 09.MAY.08 Because of her tremendous work ethic, loyalty to Lake Land and high integrity - the faculty association is awarding Sandy Gourley with the 2008 Lake Land College Outstanding Faculty Member Award.
Gourley, Mattoon, Social Science and Education Division chair and psychology instructor, will receive the award at the college's 41th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Field House. More than 1,800 graduates are eligible to attend the commencement ceremony.

Shimkus: No need to restructure FutureGen Project Date: 08.MAY.08 Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-19) reacted to a draft Funding Opportunity Announcement made by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wednesday for a "restructured" FutureGen program.
"The DOE is wasting valuable time and taxpayer dollars in pursuing a multiple-site program when the original FutureGen project site in Mattoon is ready to go," Shimkus said.
"Only by building FutureGen as originally planned will we begin to fulfill the goals outlined by President Bush in his State of the Union Address in 2003. [Full story...]

Date: 08.MAY.08 The Pana Future Farmers of America (FFA) livestock judging team recently earned third place out of 133 schools with 585 individuals participating.
The contest was held at the University of Illinois in Champaign on April 29.

Date: 08.MAY.08 Shelby Electric Cooperative is lending a hand to the Shelby County Senior Center by being a collecting point for people who want to donate a new fan.
“We see this as a great community service project,” said Member Services Representative Marla Eversole, who is also coordinating this project for the cooperative.
“With the rising cost of power and high cooling bills expected this summer, some people just can’t afford to run their air conditioners - if they even have an air conditioner, and we want to be able to give any family or individual a free fan to help them keep cool this summer,” said Mary Beth Massey, coordinator at the Senior Center. Debate heats up at Shelbyville City Council Date: 07.MAY.08 The Shelbyville City Council held a special study session before Monday night’s regularly scheduled meeting to clear the air about some plans for the future and the costs of some current projects.
Later, in the regular meeting, debate began again about the location of a proposed skateboard park.
Mayor Roy Shuff opened the study session by reminding council members Shelbyville finished the fiscal year with a $70,000 deficit. [Full story...]
